Gaylord Perry, who had lost to Oakland eight times since joining the Indians from the N. L. in 1972, beat the Athletics for the first time, posting a 2-1 victory. Catfush Hunter, who pitched for the A's, allowed only three hits, but was the victim of an intentional pass that backfired. In the seventh inning, after Jack Brohamer walked and Buddy Bell sacrificed, John Ellis struck out. A's manager Alvin Dark then ordered a pass to Chris Chambliss, bringing up Charlie Spikes, who swung at the first pitch to him and doubled, driving in both Brohamer and Chambliss. Perry yielded eight hits, but held the A's scoreless until Ray Fosse homered with two out in the ninth. [The Sporting News] |
