Triples by Jerry Moses and Aurelio Rodriguez, each driving in two runs, helped the Tigers defeat the Twins, 8-4. The Tigers started the scoring with two runs in the first on doubles by Gary Sutherland and Jim Northrup and a single by Willie Horton. Moses, who was catching because Bill Freehan had a pulled leg muscle, hit his triple in the sixth and crossed the plate himself on a single by Ed Brinkman.

The Twins then rallied for four runs in the seventh. Jim Holt batted in a pair with a double and Harmon Killebrew followed with his first homer of the season.
