After scoring their first three runs on homers, the Padres counted on a grounder with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to gain a 4-3 victory over the Mets, who went down to the 10th defeat in their last 11 games. Nate Colbert homered with Dave Winfield on base in the first and Winfield, in his next time at bat in the third, hit for the circuit to put the Padres ahead, 3-1, but Wayne Garrett tied the score with a two-run shot for the Mets in the seventh.

With one away in the Padres' ninth, a double by Derrel Thomas and two walks filled the sacks. Colbert then hit a grounder on which Felix Millan made a diving stop, but the second baseman had no chance for a play at home and instead threw to first for a putout to deprive Colbert of a hit as the Padres' winning run scored.
