Paul Splittorff yielded only two hits in the first seven innings before a split finger forced his departure, but Doug Bird then retired the last six batters in succession to wrap up the Royals' 6-1 victory over the Yankees. The Yankees' second hit, a double by Lou Piniella in the seventh, led to their only run on an infield grounder and sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson. Vada Pinson batted in a pair for the Royals.
