Turning in 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief work, Pedro Borbon received credit for a save when the Reds defeated the Cardinals, 4-3. The victory went to Don Gullett, who was the first of four pitchers used by the the Reds. The Cardinals also used four.

The Reds jumped on John Curtis for two runs in the second inning on a walk and doubles by Andy Kosco and Gullett. A single by Joe Morgan and double by Dave Concepcion added a tally in the fifth. The Reds then loaded the bases in the sixth on a double by George Foster, a hit batsman and a walk, then scored what proved to be the winning run when Foster crossed the plate while Dan Driessen was grounding into a double play.
