Aurelio Rodriguez drove in a run in each stanza with a single and double. The Tigers added two more tallies in the sixth on a single by Jerry Moses, another double by Rodriguez and single by Mickey Stanley. The Royals began their comeback with a two-run homer by Hal McRae in the seventh before they knocked out Joe Coleman during a five-run outburst in the eighth, but Jim Northrup homered in the ninth to clinch things for the Tigers.
