Getting six-hit pitching from Paul Splittorff, who turned in his first complete game of the season, the Royals defeated the Yankees, 5-1, to end a five-game losing streak. The Royals started with two runs off Mel Stottlemyre in the first inning. Jim Wohlford singled, moved up on a sacrifice and scored on a single by John Mayberry. In a surprise move, Mayberry then stole second and counted on a double by Hal McRae. The Royals added their other runs in the sixth, one of them scoring on a double steal by Vada Pinson and Fran Healy after Dave Pagan had come in to relieve Stottlemyre.
