Fred Norman beat himself in a duel with Lynn McGlothen when an error by the Reds' lefthander enabled the Cardinals to score in the ninth inning to gain a 1-0 victory. McGlothen yielded only four hits. Norman, who struck out 13, gave up a single by Reggie Smith in the ninth for the sixth hit off his deliveries. Trying to pick Smith off first, Norman threw wildly, allowing the runner to advance to second. Smith moved to third on an infield out by Ted Simmons and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Torre.
