The Royals got four-hit pitching from Marty Pattin and breezed to a 6-1 victory over the Rangers. Dave Nelson, leading off for the Rangers in the first inning, bunted safely, but Cesar Tovar hit into a double play. Pattin then retired the next 17 straight batters before Toby Harrah singled in the seventh. The Rangers scored their run in the eighth on singles by Mike Hargrove and Duke Sims, a fielder's choice and an infield out by Joe Lovitto.

Mix-ups in the Rangers' outfield allowed the Royals to score three of their runs. Lovitto and Jeff Burroughs let a fly by Fran Healy drop between them, driving in a run in the fourth inning, and two more scored in the seventh when Lovitto crashed into Burroughs as the right fielder attempted to catch a fly by Hal McRae.
