Mix-ups in the Rangers' outfield allowed the Royals to score three of their runs. Lovitto and Jeff Burroughs let a fly by Fran Healy drop between them, driving in a run in the fourth inning, and two more scored in the seventh when Lovitto crashed into Burroughs as the right fielder attempted to catch a fly by Hal McRae.
