Steve Yeager, who hit one of the Dodgers' three homers earlier in the game, came through with a tie-breaking double in the eighth inning to condemn the Padres to a 7-5 defeat. After both clubs scored twice in the first, Yeager hit his homer in the second, but the Padres went ahead, 4-3, before the Dodgers regained the lead with homers by Ron Cey and pinch-hitter Ken McMullen in the sixth. Derrel Thomas then tied the score with a circuit clout for the Padres in the seventh. Cey opened the Dodgers' eighth with a single and, after a sacrifice by Bill Russell, scored on Yeager's double.
