Johnny Bench's leadoff homer in the fourth broke a scoreless tie and got the Reds started on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Giants and John D'Acquisto. Tony Perez followed Bench's blow with a triple and scored on an infield out for a 2-0 lead. Gary Matthews' homer in the fifth was the only Giant run off Don Gullett, who gave way to Pedro Borbon in the eighth but evened his record at 3-3.
