Cookie Rojas smashed a two-run homer in the sixth inning to provide the Royals with a 4-2 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Athletics got two run-scoring doubles from Gaylen Pitts, their rookie third baseman, and won the second game in 10 innings, 2-1. In the opener, the A's scored on a double by Bill North and single by Joe Rudi in the first inning and added another tally on a double by Gene Tenace, a throwing error by Rojas and sacrifice fly by Angel Mangual in the second. The Royals tied the score with consecutive singles by Jim Wohlford, Fran Healy and George Brett, together with an error by North, in the fifth before breaking ahead in the sixth when John Mayberry singled and Rojas hit his homer.

In the nightcap, Pitts drove in Mangual with his first double of the game in the fifth inning. The Royals pulled even with two-baggers by Wohlford and Mayberry in the sixth. Pitts' second double scored Ted Kubiak to decide the game in the overtime stanza. [The Sporting News]
