Sparky Lyle walked Al Kaline with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, forcing in the run that gave the Tigers a 6-5 victory over the Yankees. Lyle took over as the Yankees' third pitcher of the game with two men on base and two out and should have gotten out of the jam, but Jim Mason fumbled a grounder by Jim Northrup, filling the sacks, before Kaline drew his pass. Lou Piniella drove in two runs to help the Yankees take an early 5-2 lead before Willie Horton swung into action for the Tigers. Horton homered with a man on base in the fifth inning and then tied the score with a run-producing single in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
