A crowd of 53,927, largest in the major leagues so far this season, turned out for "Salute to Hank Aaron Night" and although the slugger went hitless in three official trips, the Braves were able to defeat the Dodgers, 5-3, in 11 innings. The Dodgers, who were stopped on an eight-game winning streak, helped beat themselves. In the fifth, when the Braves took a 3-2 lead, two of their three runs were unearned on errors by Bill Buckner and Bill Russell. The Dodgers tied the score in the seventh when Buckner singled and Jim Wynn tripled.

With Jim Brewer on the mound for the Dodgers in the 11th, Johnny Oates and Craig Robinson singled. Mike Lum, battiing for Lew Krausse, lifted a pop foul that Ron Cey dropped for an error. Given new life at the plate, Lum singled, driving in two runs. Krausse was the winner in relief to mark his first appearance with the Braves after being called up from Tucson (Pacific Coast).
