The Cardinals, after exploding for five runs in the first inning, failed to hold the lead, but Ted Simmons came through with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning for his fourth RBI of the game to defeat the Cubs, 9-8. Simmons hit a homer with two men on base in the Cardinals' opening blast. Billy Williams batted in four runs for the Cubs, two of them with a homer in the sixth. Don Kessinger had four hits, driving in two runs and scoring two. After the Cubs tied the score at 8-8 in the eighth, Ted Sizemore singled in the Cards' half and gave way to Luis Melendez, who took second on a balk, moved to third on an infield out and scored the winning run on Simmons' sacrifice fly.
