Four double plays helped the Tigers gain a 4-3 victory over the Indians, who were unable to take full advantage of their 11 hits. Gary Sutherland, Ron Cash and Al Kaline hit singles for the first tally and, after an intentional pass to Willie Horton, Cash scored while the Indians were executing a double play on a grounder by Bill Freehan. Kaline then counted on a passed ball, but the run became earned when Jim Northrup followed with a single.

The Indians saved their scoring for the last two innings, chasing Lerrin LaGrow with two runs in the eighth and picking up their final tally off John Hiller in the ninth on a single by George Hendrick and double by Dave Duncan before Frank Duffy popped up and John Lowenstein flied out.
