Nate Colbert hit a grand-slam homer in the first inning to enable the Padres to end a nine-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over the Giants. Ron Bryant, who started for the Giants, faced six batters without retiring any. Derrel Thomas, leading off, was safe on an error, Enzo Hernandez singled and Dave Winfield walked to load the bases for Colbert's clout. Bryant then walked Cito Gaston and gave up a single by Johnny Grubb before leaving the game. The Padres added a run on a sacrifice fly by Bob Barton after Charlie Williams relieved.

After that initial outburst, the Padres subsided in their scoring until picking up their final two tallies off Tom Bradley, the Giants' sixth pitcher, in the ninth. Bobby Bonds had four hits for the Giants and batted in two runs. [The Sporting News]
