After trailing, 3-0, the Royals erupted for four runs in the second inning and went on to defeat the Rangers, 6-4. John Mayberry started the Royals' rally with a double and Hal McRae was hit on the helmet by a pitch from Jim Bibby, forcing him to leave the game. Jim Wohlford doubled, driving in Mayberry. Following a pass to Fran Healy, George Brett hit a sacrifice fly to score Richie Scheinblum, who replaced McRae. Fred Patek then tripled to send in Wohlford and Healy. Brett produced the Royals' winning margin with two doubles, the first one in the fourth driving in Healy, who had walked, and his second two-bagger in the sixth again scoring Healy, who had singled.
