The Dodgers were held to four hits, but two were all they needed to defeat the Reds, 3-2. The Reds scored their run in the first inning on singles by Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Dave Concepcion, but the Dodgers came back with two on only one hit in the second. Steve Garvey singled and Willie Crawford and Ron Cey walked to load the bases. Garvey scored when Tony Perez fumbled a grounder by Bill Russell and Crawford tallied when Steve Yeager grounded into a double play. The Reds tied the score with a homer by Morgan in the sixth.

The Dodgers ended the game with a run on one hit, another single by Garvey, in the ninth. After a sacrifice by Cey and intentional pass to Russell, Yeager was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
