Rico Petrocelli and Cecil Cooper batted in seven runs between them to lead the Red Sox to a 14-6 victory over the Yankees. Petrocelli rapped a homer and double, while Cooper collected four singles. Petrocelli's homer in the second inning ignited a four-run outburst by the Red Sox, with other runs following on singles by Dwight Evans and Dick McAuliffe, a sacrifice and singles by Juan Beniquez and Cooper.

Yankee pitching went wild in the third when the Red Sox added six runs on six walks, an error and singles by Mario Guerrero, Beniquez and Cooper. The Yankees came back with a pair of three-run innings, but the Red Sox iced the verdict by scoring their final four runs in the eighth with the help of a double by Petrocelli and triple by Evans.
