. . . where the 1970s live forever!
The Cubs' failure to protect the plate during a rundown play in the ninth inning enabled the Cardinals to gain a 1-0 victory. Ted Simmons paved the way for the run with a double and advanced on a sacrifice by Bake McBride. After an intentional pass to Joe Torre, Tim McCarver grounded to first baseman Billy Williams, who threw home. Catcher Tom Lundstedt closed in on Simmons before tossing the ball to third baseman Matt Alexander. Simmons turned, raced past Lundstedt and scored ahead of Alexander, who chased him down the line in vain. Neither Rick Reuschel nor Williams came down to cover the plate. As a result, Reuschel was the loser in his duel with Sonny Siebert. [The Sporting News]
