The Orioles scored four runs in the first inning and erupted for six more in the seventh to enable Mike Cuellar to beat the Royals, 10-3, for his sixth straight complete-game victory. The route-going performance was the 100th of the veteran lefthander's career in his 200th start for the Orioles.

In the first inning, the Orioles started the scoring with a run on singles by Al Bumbry, Rich Coggins and Tommy Davis. After Boog Powell walked to load the bases, Bobby Grich struck out, but Brooks Robinson drove in a run with a single, another scored on a wild pickoff throw by Steve Busby and a fourth run followed on a sacrifice fly by Elrod Hendricks.
