The Athletics failed to take full advantage of 15 hits, but still scored enough runs to defeat the Tigers, 4-1. Ken Holtzman, who turned in his second complete game of the season, held the Tigers to five hits and gave up their run in the second inning on a double by Ron Cash and single by Aurelio Rodriguez. The A's tied the score in their half when Reggie Jackson, Angel Mangual and Champ Summers singled. The A's then broke the tie with two runs in the third on a walk to Bill North, singles by Bert Campaneris and Sal Bando and double by Jackson.
