A fight that resulted in a dislocated shoulder for Bobby Valentine marred the first inning of a game that saw Athe ngels lose to the Brewers, 7-5. After Dave Chalk singled off Clyde Wright, the Brewers' lefthander threw a wild pitch that sailed past Valentine's head. Valentine rushed to the mound and uncorked a punch before he incurred his injury when thrown to the ground by Wright. Both combatants were ejected from the game. Chalk advanced to second on the pitch that set off the incident and scored on a single by Frank Robinson.

The Angels added three runs in the third on a bases-loaded single by Winston Llenas and sacrifice flies by Robinson and Bob Oliver. The Brewers picked up one run in the sixth and closed the gap with a two-run homer by Johnny Briggs in the seventh. Singles by Llenas and Leroy Stanton around a pass to Robinson put the Angels ahead in their half, 5-3, but that lead vanished in the ninth when Robin Yount, Dave May and Don Money singled for one run and Briggs smashed a three-run homer.
