A balk by Diego Segui allowed Rod Carew to score in the 13th inning and handed the Twins a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox. Luis Gomez started the stanza with a single and was forced by Carew, who then took third on a single by Larry Hisle. Segui started his pitching motion as Jerry Terrell reached down to scoop up some dirt in the batter's box. Apparently catching his spikes on the rubber, Segui fell off balance and plate umpire Merle Anthony called a balk.

The Twins started the game with two runs in the first inning, but the Red Sox came back with three. Bernie Carbo homered with a man on base. A double by Cecil Cooper, single by Dwight Evans and sacrifice fly by Carl Yastrzemski made it 4-2 in the third, but the Twins picked up a run on doubles by Carew and Bobby Darwin in the fifth and tied the score in the eighth when Tony Oliva singled and pinch-runner Terrell raced home from first on a double by Jim Holt.
