The homer was Aaron's 10th of the year and his 723rd in regular season games. It also was his 731st overall, including World Series and All-Star Games, putting him one ahead of Babe Ruth's total.

The Phillies held a 2-1 lead going into the seventh when Craig Robinson singled, took third on an error and scored on a single by Ralph Garr. A walk to Darrell Evans and single by Mike Lum loaded the bases, knocking out Ron Schueler. Aaron then greeted reliever Eddie Watt with his drive over the left field wall.
