The Tigers scored in only one inning of a twi-night doubleheader, but that was enough to give them a 4-1 victory in the second game after they were shut out in the first game, 4-0. Ken Holtzman hurled a three-hitter for the A's in the lidlifter to win over Mickey Lolich, who allowed four hits, including a homer by Joe Rudi. Lolich struck out 12 to increase his career total to 2,405 and move into 10th place on the all-time list.

In the nightcap, the Tigers scored all their runs in the first inning. Ron Cash reached second on an error by Dick Green and scored on a triple by Gary Sutherland. Mickey Stanley walked. After Al Kaline struck out, Dick Sharon singled, driving in Sutherland. Jerry Moses walked to load the bases. Jim Northrup struck out, but Aurelio Rodriguez singled to plate two runs.
