Two early runs enabled the Giants to defeat the Cardinals, 5-3, in a game that saw each club smash a pair of homers. The Giants scored in the third inning on singles by Dave Rader and Bobby Bonds around a walk. Gary Thomasson drew a pass in the fourth and scored when Lou Brock dropped a fly by Rader. Gary Matthews hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 4-0 before the Cardinals counted their runs in the sixth on a single by Mike Tyson and circuit clouts by Brock and Reggie Smith.
