With one pitch, Orlando Pena retired Gary Matthews on a pop-up with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning to save the Cardinals' 4-1 victory over the Giants. Reggie Smith drove in two of the Cards' runs with a double and sacrifice fly. The Giants ended Sonny Siebert's string of 29 scoreless innings pitched with an unearned run in the sixth on singles by Ed Goodson and Steve Ontiveros and an error by Ken Reitz.
