A double by Johnny Bench, which provoked a heated argument, drove in two tie-breaking runs in the ninth inning as the Reds rallied to defeat the Phillies, 7-4. Cesar Geronimo singled to open the stanza and, after an infield out, Pete Rose was passed intentionally. Joe Morgan then forced Rose before Bench lined a drive down the left field line, Geronimo and Morgan scoring. The Phillies argued to no avail that the ball landed foul. Tony Perez followed with a double to drive in Bench. Perez had a two-run homer earlier in the game, while the Phillies' scoring included a round-tripper by Willie Montanez. [The Sporting News]
