The first major league pitcher to win 10 games this season, Gaylord Perry achieved that mark when the Indians defeated the Royals, 3-1. Paul Splittorff was the loser of the duel on two unearned runs. The Indians started the game with a run in the first inning when Frank Duffy was safe on an error by Fred Patek, advanced on an infield out and scored on a single by Charlie Spikes. The Royals came back with their tally on a triple by Frank White and sacrifice fly by Vada Pinson. The tie then persisted until the Indians scored another unearned run in the eighth on a double by Joe Lis, infield hit by Spikes and wild throw by White. Lis iced the victory with the Indians' only earned run on a homer in the ninth. [The Sporting News] |
