Frank Tanana, who attended Detroit Catholic Central High School, faced his hometown club for the first time and was whacked for three homers as the Tigers defeated the Angels, 5-2. Tanana received a rude welcome in the first inning when Al Kaline singled and Willie Horton homered. Jerry Moses added a two-run drive in the seventh and, after one out, Ed Brinkman also hit for the circuit to knock Tanana out of the game. Mickey Lolich, who pitched for the Tigers, yielded seven hits, including a homer by Dave Chalk and run-scoring triple by Mickey Rivers.
