Ending a scoreless duel, the Yankees pushed over three runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Twins, 3-1. Roy White led off with a single and Walt Williams sacrificed. Bobby Murcer singled, White stopping at third, while Murcer took second on the throw home. White, who suffered a leg cramp, gave way on the bases to Mel Stottlemyre.

Lou Piniella was handed an intentional pass to load the bases. Thurman Munson singled, scoring Stottlemyre. After Graig Nettles grounded into a forceout at home, Chris Chambliss singled to drive in the Yankees' second and third runs. Pat Dobson, who started for the Yankees, left the mound in favor of Sparky Lyle in the ninth and the reliever gave up the Twins' run on singles by Larry Hisle and Eric Soderholm around a pass to Craig Kusick.
