With last-out help from Bruce Kison, Dock Ellis gained his first victory since April 24 when the Pirates defeated the Giants, 5-2. Ellis was removed with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning. Kison allowed one run to score on a wild pitch before retiring Bobby Bonds on an infield grounder.

The Pirates put together doubles by Richie Zisk and Manny Sanguillen, two errors and a single by Mario Mendoza for two runs in the second inning and added another run on two errors by Tom Bradley and a single by Gene Clines in the fifth. Singles by Zisk and Rennie Stennett and a grounder by Sanguillen produced a tally in the sixth. Ed Kirkpatrick closed out the Pirates' scoring with a homer in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
