The Padres smacked two homers among their five hits and also took advantage of Cardinal pitchers' wildness to gain a 4-3 victory. The Cardinals, who collected 11 hits, scored twice in the first inning before Bobby Tolan started the Padres going with a homer in the third. Enzo Hernandez followed with a single and Nate Colbert walked. Rich Folkers, relieving Mike Thompson, passed Willie McCovey to load the bases. Johnny Grubb hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hernandez.

After Derrel Thomas walked to fill the sacks again, Colbert counted when Dave Roberts forced Thomas. Roberts then homered in the sixth to account for the Padres' winning run, offsetting a circuit clout by Ted Simmons in the eighth inning. [The Sporting News]
