The Pirates, who were held scoreless by Randy Jones in the first six innings, broke away in the last three frames to defeat the Padres, 5-2. Derrel Thomas singled with the bases loaded to produce the Padres' runs off Ken Brett in the sixth. The Pirates came back immediately with the tying pair in the seventh and then took the lead in the eighth when Richie Zisk walked and Willie Stargell and Al Oliver singled.
