A homer by Mickey Stanley with two men on base in the eighth inning proved the decisive blow for the Tigers in an 8-6 victory over the Rangers. Willie Horton also homered for the Tigers, accounting for their initial run in the second. Gary Sutherland drove in two runs with a single in the fifth and Horton added a sacrifice fly. Al Kaline then put the Tigers ahead, 5-3, with a run-producing double in the seventh.

Jeff Burroughs homered for the Rangers in the eighth. In the Tigers' half, Aurelio Rodriguez doubled, Ed Brinkman walked and Stanley rapped his round-tripper to make losers out of the Rangers even though they rallied for two runs in the ninth before Jim Ray retired the last batter to save the game.
