The Yankees overcame a 2-1 deficit with a four-run outburst in the fourth inning and defeated the Angels, 6-4. Fernando Gonzalez and Jim Mason singled and Elliott Maddox doubled to account for the first two runs in the rally. After a walk to Lou Piniella and a wild pitch, Maddox scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer. Thurman Munson then walked and Bill Sudakis followed with a single to drive in the fourth run.
