Al Cowens, who remained in the Royals' lineup after entering the game as a pinch-runner in the 11th inning, came to bat in the 13th and knocked in a run with a single to beat the Brewers, 4-3. The Brewers scored all their runs in the second inning and the Royals did not catch up until the seventh when George Brett singled, Fred Patek doubled, Amos Otis walked and John Mayberry rapped a two-out double.
