Mario Guerrero, batting only .236 with 10 previous RBIs to his credit, drove in three runs, including the decisive pair in the eighth inning, to enable the Red Sox to defeat the Athletics, 5-3. Angel Mangual and Deron Johnson hit homers to give the A's a 3-1 lead. The first Red Sox run counted on a double by Rick Burleson and single by Guerrero in the third inning. Carl Yastrzemski batted in two runs with a single to tie the score in the sixth.
