With last-out help from Mike Marshall, Tommy John became the N. L.'s first 10-game winner of the season when the Dodgers defeated the Mets, 3-2. Tom Paciorek batted in two runs for the Dodgers, one with a triple in the second inning and another with a single in the sixth. The Dodgers added what proved to be the deciding tally in the ninth off Tug McGraw, who made his first appearance for the Mets since May 15.

Steve Yeager singled and advanced on a sacrifice by John. Yeager then was thrown out at third on a grounder by Davey Lopes, but Lopes reached second on the play and scored on a single by Bill Russell. In the Mets' half, Cleon Jones hit a two-run homer before Marshall took over and struck out Rusty Staub to end the game. [The Sporting News]
