Designated-hitter Bill Sudakis batted in three runs with a homer and double in support of Dick Tidrow's pitching as the Yankees defeated the Athletics, 5-1. Sudakis hit his homer after a single by Thurman Munson in the third inning. Before the stanza ended, the Yankees added another tally on singles by Chris Chambliss, Fernando Gonzalez and Gene Michael. Sudakis followed with his double in the third, driving in Munson, and later scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Chambliss. The A's picked up their run off Tidrow in the fifth on a pass to Reggie Jackson and singles by Gene Tenace and Ted Kubiak. [The Sporting News]
