Yielding only four hits, Dock Ellis pitched the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Giants. Ellis also beat the Giants, 5-2, June 8, but needed last-out help from Bruce Kison. This time, the righthander accomplished the job without assistance. Willie Stargell homered for the Pirates in the second inning.

After the Giants tied the score with an unearned run in the third, the Pirates broke away against Ron Bryant with three runs in the fifth. Rennie Stennett doubled, Gene Clines singled and both scored when Richie Zisk doubled. Zisk took third after a fly by Stargell and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Al Oliver.
