Cecil Cooper, who struck out six times in the previous night's 15-inning game, rebounded with four hits in five trips as the Red Sox defeated the Angels, 5-3. Cooper and Carlton Fisk, who chipped in with three hits, each scored twice. Carl Yastrzemski batted in three runs with a pair of singles.

Bill Lee, who started for the Red Sox, was rapped for 10 hits but got through five scoreless innings before quitting because of a blister on his pitching hand. Diego Segui gave up four hits in the last four innings, but the Angels were able to score once on a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth and twice more on a single by Mickey Rivers and an error in the eighth.
