Coming back after the Royals scored four runs in the eighth inning, the Tigers rallied for five in the ninth to gain an 11-9 victory. The Royals loaded the bases in the eighth on a walk to John Mayberry, single by Hal McRae, who took second on the throw to third, and intentional pass to Jim Wohlford. Al Cowens and Fran Healy followed with two-run singles to put the Royals ahead, 9-6.

The Tigers started the scoring in the ninth with an RBI double by Al Kaline. Gene Garber, relieving with one away, fanned Bill Freehan. The Royals then switched to Joe Hoerner, who made his 400th major league appearance and wound up with the defeat. Marvin Lane singled to greet Hoerner, driving in Kaline, and Gene Lamont also singled.
