Dave Giusti, making his first start since May 17, 1970, after 255 consecutive relief appearances, pitched seven innings and allowed only five hits as the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 2-0. Bruce Kison relieved in the eighth, but the Pirates also had to call on Daryl Patterson in the ninth to put down a Dodger threat.

The Pirates, in defeating Tommy John, scored a run in the second inning on a single by Richie Zisk and double by Bob Robertson. Their other run came off Mike Marshall in the eighth on a single by Kison, sacrifice by Rennie Stennett and single by Gene Clines. [The Sporting News]
