Three unearned runs in the first inning enabled the Angels to defeat the Yankees, 3-0, behind the five-hit pitching of Nolan Ryan and Skip Lockwood. Ryan had to leave the mound after six innings when a blister developed on a finger of his pitching hand. Lockwood gained his first save of the season.

With one out in the first, Denny Doyle was safe on an error by Gene Michael. After Leroy Stanton was retired, Frank Robinson singled and when Bobby Murcer bobbled the ball, Doyle scored from first base. Robinson advanced on the error and crossed the plate on a single by Joe Lahoud. Paul Schaal went out, but John Doherty doubled to drive in the third run. [The Sporting News]
