Derrel Thomas and Fred Kendall batted in two runs apiece and Willie McCovey hit a homer to lead the Padres to a 6-2 victory over the Astros. McCovey's homer started the scoring in the fourth inning. A single by Thomas and sacrifice fly by Dave Roberts added two runs to the Padres' total in the sixth. Thomas accounted for his second RBI with a single in the seventh and Kendall drove in two runs with a double. Cesar Cedeno doubled and Bob Watson homered in the Astros' half of the seventh.

The Astros threatened in the ninth when Watson and Lee May singled with none out. Vicente Romo relieved Randy Jones and retired the next two batters before walking Tommy Helms to load the bases. Dave Tomlin then stepped into the hot spot and struck out pinch-hitter Denis Menke to save the game. [The Sporting News]
