A seesaw game that saw both clubs fail to hold leads finally was decided in the 12th inning when Bill Sharp scored to give the White Sox a 10-9 victory over the Royals. The White Sox started the game with two runs on a double by Ken Henderson, but the Royals came back to count five times on six straight hits, including a double by Hal McRae. Dick Allen homered with a man on base for the White Sox in the third and McRae countered with a solo swat for the Royals, but the White Sox took an 8-6 lead with four runs in the sixth. Bill Melton hit a two-run homer and, after the White Sox loaded the bases, Henderson drove in two runs with a single. The Royals knotted the count in the eighth with singles by McRae and Fran Healy, a forceout on which McRae scored, and triple by Fred Patek.

Sharp singled in the 10th, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bucky Dent, but the Royals kept the game going in their half with a double by Healy and single by Al Cowens. However in the 12th, after Sharp singled again, Ed Herrmann bunted and both runners were safe on a fielder's choice. Dent sacrificed and when Melton followed with a high hopper to shortstop, Sharp was able to score the winning run for the White Sox. [The Sporting News]
