In a meeting of two ace lefthanders, Mickey Lolich pitched his 11th straight complete game and gained his fifth victory in succession, while Mike Cuellar was stopped on his nine-game winning streak as the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 2-0. Cuellar pitched only three innings before being tossed out of the game in an argument with plate umpire Russ Goetz.

In the third inning, Al Kaline tripled with two out and scored on a single by Willie Horton. Bill Freehan doubled, Horton stopping at third. Cuellar then walked both Aurelio Rodriguez and Jim Northrup, forcing in Horton. Cuellar beefed over the call on one of his pitches to Northrup and continued to squawk as he left the mound, leading to his ejection. Manager Earl Weaver, who joined the dispute, also was banished.
